Alcibiades Rescued -1846 Greek History Engraving

Description: Alcibiades Rescued -1846 Greek History Engraving 1846 Ancient History Wood Engraved Illustration Engraved by B. F. Waitt after artwork by Williams Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE The family of Alcibiades, it is thought, may be traced back to Eurysaces, the son of Aias, as its founder; and on his mother's side he was an Alcmaeonid, being the son of Deinomache, the daughter of Megacles. His father, Cleinias, fitted out a trireme at his own cost and fought it gloriously at Artemisium. Cleinias was afterwards slain at Coroneia, fighting the Boeotians, and Alcibiades was recused by the Socrates (a noted soldier as well as philosopher) and was reared as the ward of Pericles and Ariphron, the sons of Xanthippus, his near kinsmen. Know for his manly beauty, he was noted, also, for his unruly behavior, which was mentioned by ancient Greek and Latin writers on several occasions. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
