Al Hirschfeld Sightseers' Map of New York Poster-World's Fair opening 4/30/1939

Description: Unbeknownst to many, the noted caricaturist AL HIRSCHFELD , created a number of maps of New York City during the late 1930's that were published in THE NEW YORK TIMES. This poster, " SIGHTSEERS' MAP OF NEW YORK " was originally published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on Sunday, April 30, 1939 to celebrate the grand opening of the 1939-40 New York World's Fair on that day! This map was created to be used by tourists visiting NYC for the opening festivities. Sepia tone, as the original newspaper, this reproduction measures 10 1/4" by 15 1/4" and is on heavy stock. Suitable for framing. It is "signed" in lower left hand corner " GENUINE HAND-PAINTED CARTOGRAPHY BY HIRSCHFELD" (see picture). Note: this is part of the print, not individually signed. Profusely illustrated with famed sights throughout the five boroughs such as; Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Governors Island, Aquarium, Custom House, Wall Street, N.Y. Stock Exchange, Trinity Church, Washington Square, Woolworth Building, Bowery, Chinatown, Fulton Fish Market, Williamsburg Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Navy Yard, Bellevue Hospital, Union Square, Lincoln Tunnel, Empire State Building, Little Church Around The Corner, Penn Station, Chrysler Building, Grand Central Terminal, Metropolitan Opera House, Madison Square Garden, Columbus Circle, Radio City, Theatre District, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Rockefeller Institute, NY Cornell Medical Center, Central Park (Metropolitan Museum of Art, Zoo, Cleopatra's Needle), Hayden Planetarium, Automobile Row, Soldiers and Sailors Monument, Grant's Tomb, Cathedral of St. John The Divine, Harlem, Polo Grounds, Yankee Stadium, Lewisohn Stadium, Museum Of The American Indian, George Washington Bridge, Triboro Bridge, etc., etc., etc. Note the caricature of Fiorello LaGuardia , Mayor of New York City from 1934-1945, standing in front of a microphone in the closeup picture below, labeled " City Hall ". Also has callouts of major streets and avenues in Manhattan, New Jersey towns bordering the Hudson River, and famed sights in the outer boroughs. A large sign is positioned in Queens, pointing East, stating " To The New York World's Fair ". A wonderful addition for all collectors of World's Fair memorabilia, Hirschfeld and maps. A copy of this map can be found on page 34 of Hirschfeld's New York , published in 2001. Following is a quote from the introduction (pg. 9) of Hirschfeld's New York , by New York Times theater critic Frank Rich, commenting on this drawing; "There's an exuberance that belongs not only to New York but also to all who love it. More sardonically, in another drawing of the time titled Sightseers' Map of New York , Hirschfeld lays out the Manhattan-centric worldview that the artist Saul Steinberg would famously codify on a New Yorker cover decades later. In Hirschfeld's cartography, Manhattan is all, with the outer boroughs, not to mention New Jersey, banished graphically to the very fringes of civilization as he knew it."
