As the column made its way through the Hindu Kush, it was attacked relentlessly by Afghan tribesmen, despite ceasefire assurances by the prince, Wazir Akbar Khan. Of the 4,000 British troops and 12,000 civilians who retreated to Kandahar, only one soldier survived, and a handful of Indian sepoys. It was a devastating loss for Great Britain, the worst military defeat in its history, a complete and total humiliation. This was not the first time Afghan tribesmen banded together to repulse an occupying military force, and it would not be the last, as the Soviets can well attest. Afghanistan would be known as the Graveyard of Empires, a quagmire where great armies go to die. Because of its strategic location along the Silk Road, home to the Khyber Pass, Afghanistan is also a land that great armies have successfully conquered for at least for a little while. This remarkable collection contains coins from Afghanistan's long history, from the time of Alexander the Great to the present day...a span of over 23 centuries.
