Rhus glabra, or Smooth Sumac, is well known for its excellent color in autumn when the long compound leaves turn red and orange. Bright red berry clusters, or drupes, appear in the fall on the female plants. The fruits persist long into winter and many birds and other wildlife rely on them as a food source. Large clusters of yellow flowers appear in early summer on both male and female plants. The male flower typically attracts a greater variety of bees and pollen seeking insects, while the female flowers offer nectar only. A Colony-forming shrub, Smooth Sumac is the only shrub, or tree, native to all 48 contiguous United States. Planting and Cultivation Notes Smooth Sumac is a dioecious species - male & female flowers are produced on separate plants. For ample production of fruits or seeds, it is recommended that 3 - 5 plants be installed in fairly close proximity to ensure the presence of both sexes.
