High yielding, high quality and rust resistant, Climax Timothy matures 7 to 10 days later than most common varieties, giving that leeway often necessary for more favorable climatic conditions for field curing. This also makes it an ideal grass for late-spring grazing, though care should be taken to control grazing to 3 or 4-inches. Climax Timothy is oftentimes selectively grazed due to its very palatable flavor, soon disappearing when planted with species your livestock considers not so palatable. Used primarily for hay mixes in the U.S., Climax Timothy grass is well-adapted to high elevations and to areas with an average rainfall of 18 inches or more. The recommended seeding rate for Climax Timothy Seed is 10 to 12 pounds per acre if planted alone, and 2 to 6 pounds per acre when mixed with other grasses or legumes. The exception is when sowing a new seeding with a predominantly alfalfa field. The recommended seeding rate then is no more than 1.5 pounds per acre. Yellow Sweet Clover - Biennial sweet clover thrives under a wide range of soil and climatic conditions. However, it will not tolerate acid soils. It is drought resistant, winter-hardy and productive throughout all 50 states. Sweet clover is native to Europe and Asia, but is found now all across the U.S. Sweet clover seeds were used 100 years ago as a forage crop and soil builder. Today it is also used as a wildlife cover crop and in production of honey. Sweet clover seeds are quite alkali tolerant and even likes limestone soils. Because of its deep, heavy taproot and dense root system it opens subsoil and increase aeration, making it a valuable conservation tool. Root break down rapidly at maturity, adding organic matter to the soil. Sweet clover can be used for hay, silage, green manure or pasture. It is also one of the most valuable plants for honey production, often used solely for bee pasture. Alsike Clover (Trifolium Hybridum) - Alsike clover is a short-lived perennial plant, alsike clover lacks persistence so is treated agriculturally as a biennial. It is grown widely in the eastern and northern mid-western states, and in the Pacific Northwest from bulk clover seeds. Similar in many ways to red clover, it matures a week to ten days earlier. Red Clover (Trifolium Pratense) - Red clover is the most widely adapted of the true clovers. These short-lived perennial clover seeds are grown in Canada and most of the U.S. except the Great Plains states and the southwest. Mixes well with grass, used for hay, pasture, and soil improvement. Haifa White Clover is a highly productive winter active variety suited to rotational grazing systems in higher rainfall areas. As with all white clovers it is important to ensure that seed is not sown to deep and that pastures are frequently grazed to ensure light penetration to enhance plant establishment and development. White clover is generally not competitive with annual ryegrass species. Oats make a fantastic early season, annual plot. These oats were breed specifically for forage and yield a tremendous amount of high quality forage in the Fall of the year. University trials show that forage oats are capable of producing over 10,000 lbs. of quality forage per acre. Oats are considered cold tolerant when compared to other oat varieties but like any oat, they will freeze out in Northern climates. Expect the plants to survive until you get several hours of temperatures under 20 degrees. Typically this is after most of the season has passed. Oats for food plots can be planted in August and September (latter in the deep South if need be) for grazing during bow season. Southern food plots will last all winter but oat food plots North of Tennessee or at high elevations will most likely freeze out. Annual ryegrass is a cool-season grass well adapted to sunny conditions and moderate temperatures. Also known as Italian ryegrass or wintergrass, it is often sown at high rates to overseed warm-season turfgrasses for fall, winter, and early spring color or to provide temporary cover for soil stabilization. It is not otherwise used for turf. Annual ryegrass dies in the late spring to early summer. It often turns yellow and dies before warm-season grasses come out of dormancy. Perennial ryegrass is an important pasture and forage plant, and is used in many pasture seed mixes. In fertile soil it produces a high grass yield
