Description: This is an old hardcover book with dust jacket, 9 3/4" x 6 1/2", 315 pages, entitled "THE WHITE CASCADE: The Great Northern Railway Disaster And America's Deadliest Avalanche." The book was written by Gary Krist, it is copyright 2007 (First Edition), and published by Henry Holt & Co., New York... The book is a very well-researched and well-written account the Great Northern Railway's disaster, when two of their passenger trains get caught in a blizzard while attempting to cross The Cascade Mountains on their way to Seattle in February of 1910. The snowfall became extremely deep, and plows were overwhelmed. The train crews and the passengers were stuck for six days, until a huge avalanche occurred next to the two trains, sending them, their crews, and the passengers over a cliff and into the canyon below... In addition to the text, the book also contains 24 old photographs of the wreckage, the dead passengers lying at the bottom of the cliff, plows attempting to clear the tracks, the blizzard in the state of Washington, and more... The book is 17 years old, and it is in absolutely mint condition, except there is a 4" x 2 1/2" sticker advertising St. Luke's Hospital, glued onto the very first page of the book, which is a blank page. The dust jacket is in near mint condition, with just one very small tear, less than 1/4" in length, on the bottom edge of the dust jacket, near the right edge of the back cover. It has been neatly repaired with small piece of clear tape on the backside. Buyer pays $4.95 shipping.
