From the PSA Set Registry: 'The 1997 Upper Deck MLS collection consists of 125 cards. An important set in U.S. soccer history, this was the first national release of cards and special inserts to feature the inaugural players, uniforms, and teams of the newly established Major League Soccer. After the U.S. hosted the FIFA World Cup in 1994, the 1996 MLS season marked the return of a topflight, ten team, professional soccer league in the United States. This iconic card collection, sold in the spring of 1997, with strange logos, quirky uniforms, and cards to perfectly match, showcased five players each from the ten original 1996 MLS teams in a 50 card base set and 50 card parallel gold border set, that now includes 15 US Soccer Hall of Fame players. The collection also featured three insert sets. A 10 card Team Captain set insert at 1:6, a 6 card Trophy Winners set insert at 1:8, and a hard to find 5 card Gold Signature set insert at 1:108, which included the most recognizable star players of 1996; Cobi Jones, Alexi Lalas, Eric Wynalda, John Harkes, and Jorge Campos. Rounding out this collection were two set list cards, one each for the base and parallel gold base, and two unnumbered promo cards that were available during the 1996 season.
