This year the contest was judged by Frances Ingraham, Mary Lou Whitney and Whitney Tower. Photo # 12 shows Franklin D. Roosevelt, taking a few spins around Saratoga's Track in 1931. He enjoyed the diversions of Governor/s Day at the races while he served as New York's Chief Executive or the Governor of New York. This annual event is still active in New York to this day. Photo # 13 shows Napoleon III, one of Saratoga's distinguished visitors rides on a horse at the Casino in Congress Park, where an heirloom punch bowl of Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney's family. The occasion is Mrs. Whitney's private ball on the eve of the Whitney Stakes. This was probably in 1837. Photo # 14 shows the Hall of Springs Ballroom. The Hall of Springs Ballroom is located in Saratoga Spa State Park is home to some of Saratoga Springs' most popular attractions. At the height of the bottling frenzy in the early 1900's there were more than two hundred private well tapping into Saratoga's Mineral Springs. Amid fears of losing this precious natural resource, Saratoga Spa State Park was started as a conservation effort to preserve the mineral springs. New York State declared the site a state reservation and took ownership in 1962. In 1987 it was named a National Historic Landmark. Photos 14, 15 and 16 show Saratoga's architectural flagship, the 1873 Bacheller Mansion at 20 Circular Street. Its visual poetry, embellished with hyperbole, contrast and analogy conveys the Victorian vision of a French Renaissance Chateau, crowned by a Moorish Revival Minaret, with mansard inspired rooflines roof lines. Photo # 17 shows a Doric columned porch cupola at 102 Union Avenue. Photos 18 and 19 show the Kilmer House at 722 North Broadway, with a varied roof line expressing the ideals of High Victorian Gothic architecture and variegated shingles on the Queen Anne manner.
