He first began drawing in 1948 after beginning his studies at the Kaunas Institute for Physical Education. From 1952 to 1958, Krasauskas studied graphic art at the Lithuanian State Art Institute in Vilnius. He was not only a talented artist, but also an excellent swimmer and a member of the official Soviet Lithuanian water polo team. He scared many a friend in his day by jumping off the long pier in Palanga during storms on the Lithuanian Baltic coast. Krasauskas also played the part of a sailor in Raimundas Vabalas’ film Žingsniai naktį (Steps in the Night, 1962), and sang the role of Liutauras in an amateur production of the Lithuanian opera Gražina, by Jurgis Karnavičius, in 1961. Krasauskas married early, settling with his wife in the leafy Vilnius suburb of Žvėrynas, on Malonioji Street. He became close friends with his neighbor, the writer Algimantas Baltakis, and many of his colleagues. While sitting in the Neringa Café (a beloved gathering place for the cultural and political elite of Soviet Lithuania) or at the coffee shop of the Art Exhibition Hall, Krasauskas would sometimes create sketches with felt tip markers on napkins. Krasauskas began teaching drawing at the State Art Institute in 1961. Krasauskas became known for his exceptional drawing skills while still a student. Unlike many other Lithuanian artists, he was particularly good at portraying people. His caricatures and portraits have been regularly appearing in the national press since 1952. When the writer Mykolas Sluckis invited him to illustrate his novellette Geri namai (A Good Home, 1954), the talented graphic arts student quickly produced fitting ink drawings that were easily incorporated onto the pages of the book itself (and not as inserts, as was the fashion at the time). Krasauskas’ thesis project—a series of woodcuts for Dėdės ir dėdienės (Uncles and Aunts, 1958), a famous story by Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas—was a collection of richly illustrated scenes from village life, approximating the style of his teachers, Vytautas Jurkūnas and Antanas Kučas. Literature was extremely important to Krasauskas, and he illustrated more than twenty publications in his lifetime. Krasauskas created etchings full of dramatic pathos and glory for works by Justinas Marcinkevičius, Eduardas Mieželaitis, the Russian poet Robert Rozhdestvensky, or editions of Shakespeare’s sonnets, but he also happily illustrated satirical works producing images for Algimantas Pabijūnas’ 100 perkūnsargių (100 Lightning Rods, 1967), Leonas Kiauleikis’ Pražūtinga profesija (A Disastrous Profession, 1970), and Trejos devynerios (Three Nines), the 1970 work by Teofilis Tilvytis. His series of caricatures of Lithuanian writers, published in 1963 in the literary weekly Literatūra ir menas under the title Linksma akim (With a Playful Eye), accompanied by text written by Grigorijus Kanovičius, became a chronicle of the literary life of his day.
