Japan's Kagoshima Island This is an original press photo. Kagoshima, Japan - A volcano island, Sakurashima, in southern Japan, erupted last Thursday, injuring four university students when they were caught near the pit. Stones were hurled 1,500 feet into the air, landing on two islands two miles away where the students were visiting. Reports that the 500 school children climbing the mountain, had descended just prior to the eruption. Officials of the Kagoshima District Weather Observatory said its seismometer registered 300 mikrons of vertical shock when the south ridge atop the island exploded with a great detonation. It was the first major eruption since 1946. Atop the island is a crater, 1,200 feet wide and 200 feet deep. This series of photos of photos were made by a cameraman aboard a fishing vessel on Kagoshima Bay showing the eruption beginning from left; one minute after the explosion and ending with the last two minutes afterwards....Photo measures 9.25 x 7inches.
