The author's Obituary:BRADFORD SMITH, AUTHOR, TEACHER; English Professor, Novelist and Biographer Dies at 54SHAFTSBURY, Vt., July 14 —Bradford Smith, educator and author, whose books include novels, biographies and works of social history, died today in his home of cancer. He was 54 years old. Mr. Smith's best‐known books were the biographies of Gov. William Bradford of the Plymouth Colony and a Capt. John Smith. For the latter he received the Society of Colonial Wars' citation of honor. Surviving are his widow, the former Marion Collins; a son, Alanson B.; a brother, Wallis Smith, and two grandchildren. Bradford Smith, whose works were often set in far‐away locales, was a peripatetic Yankee. in North Adams, Mass., and tracing his ancestry to Governor Bradford, he spent many years living and teaching in Japan and Europe. After a brief skirmish with chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he decided to switch courses in midstream and transferred to Columbia University, receiving a degree in arts in 1930 and a master's the next year. Soon after his graduation, he went to Japan, where he was a professor of English at St. Paul's University in Tokyo and a lecturer at the Imperial University. In 1936 he returned home, teaching at several schools, including Columbia, Bennington College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Since 1950 he and his wife Marion had worked with Fulbright scholars in the United States and abroad. From 1959 to 1961 they were co‐directors of the Quaker International Center in New Delhi, India. Throughout his many assignments Mr. Smith wrote prolifically. He also was active as a book reviewer and author of magazine articles. A novel, “To the Mountain,” which was set in Japan, appeared in 1936. It was followed a year later by “This Solid Flesh,” a story of a marriage between a Caucasian and an Asian. In 1943 “The Arms Are Fair” was published. It was a novel dealing with a Japanese soldier in China, and was called “appealing and well written” by a reviewer. Among Mr. Smith's other works were “The Story of Jesus (1948), “Bradford of Plymouth (1951), “Why We Behave Like Americans (1957), “Portrait of India (1962), and “Meditation, the Inward Art” (1963).
