This is an authentic (NOT a computer scanned reprint), genuine1976 photogravure image by the renown photographic master Andre Kertesz. It was created from the original glass plate negative he made in circa 1932 and is part of a historically significant series of 200 surrealist nude studies by Kertesz of which 120 were famously exhibited. This quality sheet fed gravure print was originally issued as part of a hardbound compilation of photo-gravures printed in Spain in 1976 from Kertesz's meticulously restored glass plate negatives (see below for more information). These were the only gravures ever printed of this historic landmark series from the restored original negatives. The image itself was made with a glass plate view camera and Kertesz used two particular female models for the series, Najinskaya Verackhatz and Nadia Kasine. Kertesz began this surrealist experimentation with mirrors in the late 1920's with most of the exhibited images being attributed to 1932-33. The series was first exhibited in Paris in 1932 causing a sensation that helped catapult Kertesz to international fame in the art world. In 1936 they were exhibited in New York at the Museum Of Modern Art, again causing a furor. Kertesz had "fun house" mirrors installed in his studio to experiment and create the landmark series. By the 1960's the entire series of original glass plate negatives was thought to be permanently lost due to deterioration and oxidation. In the early 1970's a highly trained restoration specialist was employed to salvage these innovative pieces of art history. Using a newly discovered technique for removing oxidation, he meticulously and painstakingly labored on the plates until this masterpiece collection was perfectly restored to its original beauty for the 1976 printing of these marvelous photogravures. This photogravure plate is guaranteed to be authentic and comes with a hand signed CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY (COA) with unique individual registered serial number from the Finephoto Vintage Archive & Database. Under magnification this plate shows a tight "honeycomb" grid, excellent pressing of ink and a wide range of tone - all indicative of a quality sheet fed gravure print. The watermark word "Finephoto" does not appear on the actual print. We list beautiful original vintage photographs, photogravures and antique prints everyday! ABOUT PHOTOGRAVURE: Photogravure is an intaglio print making process utilizing a carefully etched copper plate made from the original negative/image. Prints are made by pressing suitable paper heavily down upon the inked copper plate which has been intricately etched to varying depths corresponding with the actual tonality of the original negative, This precisely etched plate combined with a fine "honeycomb" screen controls the amount of ink to be transfered to the paper at any given point in direct proportion to the variation of tone in the original image. The result is a true continuous tone print which combines many qualities of a traditional silver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching, engraving or lithograph. Rich in tonal detail, the photogravure process produces delicately rendered shades for a look which is unique in the world of photographic print making. In the early to mid 1900's photogravure was selected (when budgets allowed) for special high quality publishing and portfolio projects, but due to it's significant expense and labor, the process is rarely seen today. From Man Ray and Ruth Bernhard to Brett Weston and Ansel Adams, many of the world's most renown photographic masters have published their images in the rich photogravure process.
