Description: I bought this in Lancaster, Pennsylvania many years ago. It was probably brought into this country by an immigrant (probably of Dutch descent.) There was very little tin this country during the 18th century. If you had some, it was like owning gold. It didn’t start being imported until the first the 19th century. That’s when all the painted tin started to appear by craftsman in United States. This box is very well-made. There are no issues with the box except for a little ding by the handle. See photo. It could probably be pushed out. The handle is made of rolled copper. The box still has a brownish tint to it. It opens and closes smoothly. The lock is still in place but there is no key. These were used for jewelry or important papers. It measures 14 1/2 inches long, 6 1/2 inches wide, and approximately 9 1/2 inches tall to the top of the hand.
