Description: This an 1887 N172 baseball card of the Detroit Wolverines' Edward Hugh "Ned" Hanlon, made by the Goodwin & Company tobacco manufacturer in New York City. It was authenticated by PSA, given a grade of Poor-1 Marks and encapsulated. The PSA Certification number is 743625341. This set of cards were produced from 1887-1890. The variation of this card is entitled, Bat In R/Hand At Side. Mr. Hanlon is described beneath his photo as the centerfielder (C.F.) of the "Detroits". There is a math equation on the back of the card, hence the PSA notation of Marks. The sepia photos for this set were produced by the Hall Studio of New York City and affixed to cardboard stock. Please look at the photographs, there are areas where the photo has separated from the cardboard. There is a crease running through Mr. Hanlon's name and through the words, Copyrighted and Goodwin. There are also marks in the central portion of the top border. The cards in this set are approximately 1 and 1/2" x 2 and 1/2". These cards were distributed in two brands of Goodwin & Company cigarettes, Old Judge and Gypsy Queens. The backs of the cards are blank. Ned Hanlon (1857-1937), along with Charles Bennett, played for the Detroit Wolverines in each year of their existence, 1881-1888, including the 1887 pennant winner. His playing career spanned 1876-1914, and he enjoyed a tremendous career as a manager. He was the manager of five pennant-winning teams. He is sometimes called the "Father of Modern Baseball" for his "Inside Baseball" innovations and stratagies, which included focusing on teamwork, speed and execution, the hit and run play, the squeeze play, the sacrifice bunt, the double steal, and the Baltimore Chop (a batted ball that takes a high hop near home plate, allowing the runner to reach first place safely). Connie Mack, who Mr. Hanlon mentored, said of him, "I always rated Ned Hanlon as the greatest baseball leader baseball ever had. I don't believe any man lived who knew as much as baseball as he did." Mr. Hanlon was highly thought of for his assessment of talent; many of his players reached the Hall of Fame and many of his players went on to become some of the game's greatest managers. He played for the Cleveland Blues, Pittsburgh Alleghenys, Pittsburgh Burghers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Baltimore Orioles. He managed the Pittsburgh Alleghenys, Pittsburgh Burghers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Baltimore Orioles, Brooklyn Superbas, and the Cincinnati Reds. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996. The Hall of Fame postcard and the Perez Steele postcard, 08466 of 10,000, are included. Thank you for looking!
