ITEM DETAILS Title: California Illustrated: Including a Description of the Panama and Nicaragua Routes; with Forty-Eight IllustrationsAuthor: John M. LettsPublisher: R. T. Young, New YorkPublication Date: 1853 Edition: Fourth Thousand (Fourth Edition) Condition: Good ITEM DESCRIPTION A rare volume to find in any condition! Note that this is the 4th edition and only contains 12 illustrated plates, including the frontispiece. Howes states: "Number of plates vary in copies of all issued but 48 is the proper complement.” The text portion of this volume has been collated and is complete. Original publisher binding shows moderate wear as pictured, including rubbing and soiling to the boards and spine, moderate wear to the joints, general wear around the extremities including bumping to the corners and some chipping and loss to the spine extremes, and rubbing and soiling to the page edges. Otherwise this is an attractive, well-preserved antique volume! Internally, this volume is in good shape overall. Both the front and rear hinges show heavy cracking, and the rear board is nearly detached. With that said, both boards are currently attached to the binding, as are all page groupings. The volume does not feel particularly loose despite this wear, though the boards could certainly stand to be reinforced, the rear board in particular. There are some bookseller markings on the front fly pages, but otherwise this volume is free from bookplates, signatures, inscriptions and library markings. The text block of this volume is clean overall. There is typical age-related toning to the pages, staining throughout caused by early exposure to moisture, as well as foxing and soiling scattered throughout, and some general light edge wear. Otherwise clean and perfectly readable throughout! Illustrated with 12 full page plates. Make sure to see the photos above as all the illustrations in this volume are shown. 224 pages. Measures approximately 9 1/4 inches tall by 6 1/2 inches wide by 1 inch thick. A perfect addition to any fine collection or a wonderful gift for someone special! Price includes FAST, FREE shipping!
