Moderate wear to extremities with heavier scuffing corners and joints. Spine peeling at joints, binding exposed. Head and tail seem to have antiquarian repairs that have since perished. Spine scuffed with dulled gilt compartments. Tips have early repairs that have since crushed. Boards are scuffed and worn. Front gutter split with binding mesh exposed. Marbled end papers modestly soiled with toned edges. Dampness staining afflicts the half-title, title at gutters. Old hand ownership of G.W. Elliot (George Washington Elliot Sr. 1838-1918) on half-title. More on this interesting provenance below. Light offsetting from engravings especially frontis. Light toning throughout with consistent foxing. Foxing moderate at times. Rear fly torn with loss. Binding remains intact. Please see photos. Incredibly scarce first Paris edition in English with Barlow’s latest and final corrections. No other copies of this edition. Barlow (1754-1812) was appointed U.S. minister to Frances and served to negotiate an ends to the Berlin Decree and Milan Decree. In October 1812, Barlow set off for Vilnius to negotiate a treaty with the French foreign minister, who was based in Lithuania to prepare for the French invasion of Russia. The French army was already in full retreat from Moscow by the time he arrived. Barlow chose to the take the southerly route to Paris, by way of Krakow and Vienna, became ill and died of pneumonia on December 26, 1812. Aerosmith musician Steven Tyler and notable actress Liv Tyler are directly related to the previous owner of this book, George Washington Elliot Sr. (1838-1918) Elliot was featured on the TV show “Who Do You Think You Are” Season 9, episode 8. According to the show, George W. Eliot fought in the Civil War in the Battle of Antietam and in Gettysburg. He and his wife Eliza had 17 children. George was the son of an indentured servant father and slave mother. George would be Liv Tyler’s great-great-great grandfather. George would play the drums during the Civil War. RAREF1813COQW
