I have searched everywhere for a mask filter option and I believe that this is the best possible choice. It is very thin, comfortable, breathable and according to Filti, highly protective as far as I can see from the company's information and from the testing that has been done. This is perfect material for masks with filter pockets. You should go to the Filti.com web site or their FaceBook page, "Getfilti" and read the information for yourself and about the testing that has been done on this material. I and my family are all using this material for our masks. Filti Face Mask Material has 3 layers. It is constructed from 1) polypropylene spunbond, nonwoven with a 2) Nanofiber fine fitration layer and 3) surface layer of polyester nonwoven. This material is also being used by many to make face masks. Filti did confirm that one layer is enough. This material is rated as MERV-16 (16 is the highest). MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value or in plain English "how effective is your air filter"? The higher the number the fewer dust particles and other contaminants are allowed to pass through. MERV 13-16 materials are used in hospitals and scientific research lab settings. MERV-16 is up to 95% efficient at 0.3 micron at 5.33cm/sec face velocity when machine tested. The efficiency also has to do with how the material is being used and how air tight to the face it is being applied. As a filter it should filter out about 83% of the particulates. Another bit of information from Filti, the material is what they call "hydrophobic" meaning it repels water as you will see in one of the pictures. This is important because it helps to stop moisture from being breathed in and your breath moisture from being expelled into the air. So you are protecting others, and you are also being protected. Even though viruses are about .1 micron in size this material is capable of trapping those small particles. You should do yours as well. I personally have the 2 layer cotton masks in the picture (which are very light and I'm sure not very protective in themselves) and I add this layer as extra protection. It adds no bulk or weight to the mask and the breathability is great. I do not expect N95 protection as we don't need it. But it should give added protection to the face masks we will all be wearing for the foreseeable future. There are two distinct sides to this fabric 1) fuzzy (away from your face/captures particles) and 2) smooth (towards your face/non-woven Polyrophylene moisture barrier). The company does not know if washing is effective for killing the virus. The CDC recommends moist heat incubation per their web site. (Most ovens don't go that low. The company has said that 170 is fine, but no higher.) Fill an oven safe bowl or pan about 2/3 full with water. Put your Filti Fabric filters between 2 sheets of foil. When the oven has reached 150 (or 170), place the bowl on a lower rack, and the foil on an upper shelf. Leave it in the oven for 30 minutes. They also say don't machine or hand wash (they don't know if that will get rid of virus), put it in a dryer, don't iron it, and don't microwave it. Hope all of this information helps you and not overwhelms you. I just want you to be comfortable with the product you are purchasing and for you to know that there was much thought put into what to actually use when deciding on using this material as a filter.
