Description: This listing is for a really nice, classic split shank 14K yellow gold ladies ring featuring an oval natural Malaya garnet. Garnet is not really a kind of gemstone, but rather a family of related gem species. Malaya is an orange variety of mixed garnet species (usually primarily almandite, pyrope, and spessartite) and is one of the more interesting of all garnet stories. "Malaya" (or "malaia") is a Swahili word, and if you look up the translation, you will see that it means "prostitute"! So, how does a gem come to be known by this name? Well, a secondary meaning of the word is "outcast", and a tertiary meaning is "without a family". This gem was discovered by eastern African miners who were looking for rhodolite garnet crystals. Instead, they came upon these unknown orange crystals. When sorting the crystals, they had no classification in which to put these new orange gems...they were "without a family" or "outcasts"...hence the name! This is a gemstone that we imported directly from a Nairobi based gem dealer. Our contact was initiated by a close family member of ours who has been a missionary in Kenya for many years. The gemstone measures 6.9 x 5.5 mm and weighs 0.99 carat. It exhibits a beautiful, slightly brownish orange color, kind of reminiscent of an orange lotus flower color, and is well cut, especially for a "native cut" gemstone. It is not quite eye clean; kind of "eye cleanish" with many small crystal inclusions, mostly visible only under magnification. In the trade, we'd call it a "busy" stone. This gemstone is 100% genuine, natural, untreated, and unenhanced. Garnet is January's birthstone, but this ring is a joy to own and wear regardless of your birth month! The mounting is by a great company located in Lafayette, Louisiana called Stuller Settings, style number 70549-7x5, fashioned in solid 14 karat yellow gold. The ring is currently finger size 6 but is easily sizable by any competent jeweler. The ring weighs 3.0 grams.
